South Africa publishes subscriber photo selection for September 19–25 — Daily Maverick

In South Africa, Daily Maverick published a weekly selection of photographs from subscribers to the First Thing newsletter for September 19–25, 2026. It includes eight works featuring scenes of waiting for a bus, a road, the sky and nature.

The gallery features “Billy and the kids waiting for the bus” by Jan Stemmett, “Before the rush” by Robert Gouverneur, “Corporate ladder, Kruger Park-style” by Kevin Farr, and “Country road traffic” by Rens Rezelman.

The publication also featured “Lighting up the sky” by Gerhardt Endres, “Gripen times three” by Carl Ohlhoff, “Starting off young” by Jan Pascal, and “Nature’s curtain call” by Garth McJarrow.

Submission terms

First Thing subscribers can submit photographs. After subscribing, the link for submitting photos is available in the Picture of the Day section. The editorial team asks contributors, where possible, to send high-resolution landscape photographs.

Each week, the publication features no more than 20 works and encourages authors to continue submitting photographs if their image was not included in the current selection. Authors retain all rights to their works, and submitting a photograph constitutes permission for its publication on the website in this format. For reuse of works, the publication asks readers to contact the editorial team, which can put interested parties in touch with the authors.
