South African police lieutenant general arrested on rape suspicion — Daily Maverick
In South Africa, a 59-year-old lieutenant general of the South African Police Service has been arrested on suspicion of raping an 18-year-old woman and sexually grooming a 16-year-old girl. As Daily Maverick reports, the official’s name has not been publicly disclosed, and the arrest took place on September 21.
He is expected to appear before the Randburg Magistrate’s Court in Gauteng province on September 22. A police statement said the suspicion of sexual grooming concerns events that allegedly took place in July and August 2026. The alleged rape occurred in May 2026 at a Sandton hotel, according to SAPS.
Work of the special team
The arrest was carried out by officers from the Commission Recommendations Implementation Team. Police had previously explained that this unit investigates cases arising from the recommendations of the Madlanga Commission.

The commission is, in particular, examining the possible infiltration of a criminal cartel into South Africa’s criminal justice system, politics and private sector. According to the publication, the lieutenant general’s arrest is linked to the work of this commission.
Statement by police leadership
Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane welcomed the arrest. She said law enforcement officers must protect women and children, and that their rank, position or seniority does not place anyone above the law. According to her, substantiated allegations of a possible crime by a police officer must be investigated impartially.

According to the latest SAPS data for April–June 2026, the number of sexual offences in South Africa decreased by 0.8%, from 11,630 to 11,532 cases. The number of murders during this period fell by 5.9%, from 5,770 to 5,427. Police also reported a 0.3% nationwide decrease in rapes.
