In South Korea, men spend almost twice as much on dates as women

In South Korea, unmarried men aged 25 to 39 said they spend an average of 145,800 won, or about $108, on a single date. This is almost twice the average spending by women, which amounts to 84,000 won, The Korea Herald reports.

Breakdown of expenses

The survey was conducted in August by local dating agency Gayeon among 506 unmarried men and women aged 25 to 39. On average, respondents believed that men should pay 60% of dating expenses and women 40%.

Arguments over money

Arguments with partners over dating expenses were reported by 17.8% of survey participants. Another 55.7% said they had not had such arguments, while for 26.5% the question did not apply to them or they had no dating experience.

Among men, 19.7% of respondents reported arguments, compared with 15.9% among women. Among those who had conflicts over money, 37.8% cited one partner paying little or not paying at all as the reason. Another 34.4% pointed to differences in spending habits or preferences for how to spend leisure time.

Men most often linked conflicts to different approaches to spending and leisure, with 48% giving this answer. Among women, 40% most often cited a partner paying little or not paying at all as the reason, while 30% mentioned situations in which a partner insisted on splitting the bill equally despite earning more.
