South Korea releases identity of suspect in murder of Chinese student
Police in North Gyeongsang Province, South Korea, have released the identity of 31-year-old Chinese national Zheng Changsheng, who is suspected of murdering and dismembering a 25-year-old Chinese student. According to the Korea Herald, the suspect was the woman’s instructor.
Identity disclosure
Police posted Zheng’s name, age and photographs on their website. The information will remain available until October 1. Previously, law enforcement officials referred to the man only by the Korean version of his name — Jeong.
The decision to disclose his identity was made by a committee that convened the previous day. The committee said that the crime was particularly brutal and caused significant harm, and that there was sufficient evidence supporting the suspicions. It cited public interest and the need to prevent similar crimes as grounds for the decision.

Investigation circumstances
According to investigators, on August 20, Zheng killed the woman in his studio apartment in Hayang, located in Gyeongsan, North Gyeongsang Province. He then allegedly dismembered her body and left the parts in several locations, including Gyeongju and Gunpo in Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul.
Zheng was arrested on August 25. He faces five charges, including murder, dismemberment, abandonment and concealment of a body, as well as obstruction of official duties through deception.
Investigators believe that after the murder, he filed a false missing-person report to deflect suspicion from himself. He is also suspected of changing into women’s clothing, traveling to Dongdaegu Station and switching off the victim’s phone in order to prevent police from tracking her movements. Law enforcement officials plan to transfer the suspect to prosecutors by Friday.
