More than 4 km completed during construction of underwater tunnel in China
In Zhejiang Province in eastern China, the Yongzhou tunnel boring machine, operating from the Ningbo side on the construction of the Jintang underwater tunnel, has completed more than 4,000 meters. Less than 1 km remains to the planned connection point beneath the sea, ECNS reports.
16.18 km-long tunnel
The Jintang Tunnel will have a total length of 16.18 km and is a key part of the Ningbo-Zhoushan railway. Once construction is completed, it will become the world’s longest underwater tunnel for high-speed rail, according to ECNS.
The tunnel’s shield section is 11.21 km long. It is being built from the Ningbo and Zhoushan sides by two tunnel boring machines that are expected to meet beneath the sea.

Section from the Ningbo side
The excavation section from the Ningbo side is 4.94 km long. Its lowest point is located 92 meters below the seabed.
The China-developed Yongzhou machine is currently passing through the hardest rock section on the underwater route. Once the project is completed, the Ningbo-Zhoushan railway will provide Zhoushan with a railway connection for the first time.
