The Kazakh Embassy in Ukraine has confirmed that 12 Kazakh citizens who fought on the side of the Russian army are being held captive in Ukraine.
This was reported by Fergana News, citing a response from the consular section of the Kazakh Embassy.
The diplomatic mission noted that this information is based on data provided by an authorized Ukrainian government agency.
At the same time, the embassy clarified that it does not keep separate records of Kazakhstani prisoners of war by category.
Earlier, the Ukrainian government project “I Want to Live” reported that 12,666 citizens of Central Asian countries had signed contracts with the Russian Ministry of Defense to participate in the war against Ukraine. Of these, according to the data, 2,389 are citizens of Kazakhstan.
The project also claimed that at least 270 Kazakhstani citizens who fought on the Russian side have been killed.
Ukraine and Russia conducted a prisoner-of-war exchange on a 205-for-205 basis, according to preliminary data from reports by the Russian side and Telegram channels. Official details regarding the location, time, and lists of participants are currently being clarified.
Ukraine has managed to repatriate more than 9,000 of its citizens from Russian captivity, including both military personnel and hundreds of civilians. This was reported by Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets, who emphasized that efforts to bring people home are ongoing.
