The President of Latvia has tasked the opposition with forming a new government

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs has tasked MP Andris Kulbergs of the opposition party "United List" with attempting to form a new government.

This was reported on the Latvian president’s website.

Kulbergs is to hold negotiations on forming a coalition and present the composition of the new government, which must still receive the support of the Saeima.

Rinkēvičs explained his decision by stating that forming a new government is a better option than keeping the current government in an acting capacity for five months until the parliamentary elections.

The president emphasized that due to time constraints, the process of forming a coalition must proceed more quickly than usual. By May 25, Kulbergs must submit a report on the progress of negotiations, the possible distribution of posts among the parties, and a draft government declaration.

The “United List” is currently the largest opposition force in the Latvian parliament.

Andris Kulbergs entered the Saeima following the 2022 elections. Before entering politics, he was known as a businessman and automotive industry expert. In parliament, he notably chaired the investigative commission on issues related to the implementation of the Rail Baltica project.

The next parliamentary elections in Latvia are scheduled for October 2026.

Latvia has issued a note of protest to Russia over drones that entered the country’s territory.

Latvia acknowledged the failure of its drone detection systems following the crash of Russian UAVs.
