Poland did not support the call to rename Bandera Street in Vinnytsia
The City Council of the Polish city of Kielce was unable to pass a resolution calling on the authorities in Vinnytsia to rename Stepan Bandera Street.
The initiative was proposed by deputies from the Law and Justice (PiS) party. Twelve deputies voted in favor of the document, while two abstained. Meanwhile, the 11 representatives of the Civic Platform who were present at the meeting did not participate in the vote.
At least 13 out of 25 votes were required to include the resolution on the agenda.
PiS faction leader Marcin Stempniewski stated that the authors of the document had counted on support given the long-standing partnership between Kielce and Vinnytsia, as well as the assistance the Polish city has provided to Ukraine since the start of the full-scale war.
The text of the resolution called on the mayor and city council of Vinnytsia to rename Stepan Bandera Street, which was named in 2022.
The issue is expected to be reconsidered at the next session of the Kielce City Council on June 25.
