Bill on training for parliamentarians under 60 submitted in Poland — Interia

In Poland, the parliamentary group "Development Plus" has submitted to the Sejm a bill on mandatory military training for parliamentarians under the age of 60. The initiative applies to both men and women, Interia reports.

What the bill provides for

According to Michał Dworczyk, the bill contains two proposals: mandatory training for parliamentarians with theoretical and practical components, as well as the possibility for parliamentarians to serve in the Territorial Defence Forces (WOT).

Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated that parliamentarians should not be exempt from duties related to state security. He also noted that a parliamentary mandate is not lifelong and that citizens should contribute to strengthening Poland's security.

Arguments of the initiative's authors

Dworczyk assessed that parliamentarians' knowledge of security and defence is limited and said he intends to persuade representatives of other political forces to support the bill. At the end of September, "Development Plus" presented the report "An Army for War, Not for Parade. Principles of a New Defence Policy," which, among other things, provided for mandatory defence training for women and men after completing secondary school.
