In Poland, a river that has been underground for over 100 years will be brought back to the surface
In the Polish city of Łódź, work has begun on the restoration of the Lamus River, which has flowed underground for over a century. Once the project is complete, the river will once again be open and will flow through the city park.
The project involves restoring the river’s natural course, creating terraces, recreational areas, walking paths, lighting, and video surveillance. Benches, gazebos, and art installations will also be installed in the park to recreate the area’s historical appearance.
According to the project’s designers, bringing the river back to the surface will help drain rainwater more effectively, reduce the city’s heat island effect in the summer, and create better conditions for local flora and fauna.
Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026. After that, the Lamus will once again flow through the park in an open channel. The project is considered one of the few of its kind in Europe, as the river has been underground for over 100 years.
