Portugal has banned the covering of faces in public places

Portuguese President António José Seguro has signed a law banning the wearing of clothing that completely conceals the face in public places.

The bill initially focused specifically on the burqa, but during deliberations, it was expanded to cover all forms of face concealment. A fine of €150 to €750 is imposed for unintentional violations, and €400 to €3,000 for intentional ones.

At the same time, exceptions are provided for medical and professional reasons, artistic and promotional events, as well as specific situations related to safety, weather, air travel, and visits to places of worship.

Separately, the law provides for penalties for those who force others to cover their faces based on gender—up to two years in prison or a fine.

The Portuguese Air Force will receive AR5 drones from the technology company Tekever to enhance maritime surveillance. The company is also supplying these same systems to the Ukrainian Defense Forces, where they are already performing reconnaissance missions.

Portugal has stepped up controls along its southern maritime border due to the migration crisis in Ceuta. The Coast Guard and Navy patrol the Algarve coast daily from both sea and land, monitoring suspicious vessels and potential attempts at illegal migration.
