335 buildings declared dangerous in Larnaca district — Cyprus Mail

In the Larnaca district of Cyprus, 335 buildings have been classified as dangerous, with 189 assigned to the highest-risk category and being considered as a priority. The Larnaca District Local Government Organisation reported this, Cyprus Mail writes.

Inspections and safety measures

The organisation said that after recording and technically assessing hundreds of cases, it is taking measures to eliminate hazards and demolish dangerous buildings. Responsibility for maintaining the structures and eliminating risks lies with their owners, it said.

Since April 1, 2025, the organisation has assumed responsibility for dealing with dangerous buildings and inherited 563 registered cases of structures that could pose a danger. After data updates, on-site inspections and new reports from residents, municipalities and communities, 1,101 potentially dangerous buildings were added to the register.

Specialised private civil engineers were engaged to speed up assessments. So far, 378 visual inspections have been commissioned and 372 technical opinions have been submitted.

Demolitions at owners’ expense

In the district, 67 measures were carried out to eliminate threats, including the installation of fences and other protective means; owners also took action and demolitions were carried out. Seventeen buildings have already been officially declared dangerous, while procedures concerning another 22 sites are at an advanced stage.

One dangerous abandoned building on Stavrodromiou Street in Larnaca was recently demolished after repeated actions by the organisation. The demolition was paid for by the owner. The organisation also reported similar cases in Larnaca and Tersefanou, where dangerous buildings were demolished after parts of the structures collapsed, following complaints or on-site inspections.

If owners do not eliminate the danger, the organisation intends to apply measures provided for by law, which may ultimately lead to the demolition of the building.
