War veterans have been detained in Russia on charges of kidnapping
Two participants in the war against Ukraine have been arrested in Russia’s Voronezh region on suspicion of kidnapping and extortion.
This was reported with reference to Russian media.
Investigators believe that the group’s organizer is Daniil Astakhov, an employee of the military registration and enlistment office, who lost both legs after being wounded in the war. The second suspect is veteran Vitaly Borisov. Both are suspected of two counts of kidnapping and two counts of extortion.
According to investigators, last year a group of at least seven people operated near the border with the occupied part of Luhansk Oblast in the town of Rossosh. They allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old teenager and a woman using violence. The teenager was released after property was handed over, and the woman paid 100,000 rubles.
After that, the victims were released. The defense requested a reduction in the preventive measure, but the court kept both in custody, taking into account Astakhov’s prior conviction for driving under the influence.
