Riga to Double Tourist Tax Starting in 2027
The Riga City Council has approved a decision to increase the tourist tax, which will take effect in 2027. The authorities in the Latvian capital expect that the rate increase will help raise additional funds for the development of tourism infrastructure and the city.
Currently, Riga has one of the lowest tourist taxes in Europe—one euro per night. In Vilnius, Kaunas, and Palanga, it is 2 euros per night, and in other cities, it is even higher. Additionally, Kuldīga introduced a tourist tax of 1.5 euros per night starting this year.
It is expected that, starting January 1, 2027, the tourist tax will be increased to 2 euros per night, including VAT.
However, the total amount of the tax cannot exceed 17.80 euros for the entire continuous period of a tourist’s stay at the accommodation facility.
Local authorities have also held meetings with industry organizations and business owners who support the increase in the tourist tax, seeing it as an opportunity for the additional funding to attract even more tourists, according to LSM.
