A new candidate for the post of prime minister has been nominated in Romania
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has officially nominated Adrian Vestea, a member of the National Liberal Party (PNL), for the position of prime minister (pictured right). This decision was made after the previous candidate, Eugen Tomac, who had attempted to form a government of technocrats, declined his mandate due to a lack of sufficient support in parliament.
The head of state expressed full confidence in the abilities of 52-year-old Vestea, who currently heads the Brașov County Council. According to the president, the new candidate is a staunchly pro-Western advocate of dialogue, has a successful track record as a mayor, county leader, and minister, and has long held positions of responsibility in budget management.
The newly appointed prime minister now has 10 days to form a new cabinet and secure the mandatory vote of confidence from the Romanian parliament. This step is expected to put an end to the prolonged political crisis in the country, which began in April 2026 following the collapse of the coalition involving the Social Democrats and the resignation of Ilie Bolojan’s government.
This was reported by the Romanian TV channel Digi24.
The National Liberal Party of Romania (PNL) has officially decided not to vote in favor of approving the “technocratic” cabinet, the formation of which the president entrusted to the new prime minister candidate, Eugen Tomac.
Romanian President Nicușor Dan has an alternative plan in case Parliament does not support Eugen Tomac’s candidacy for prime minister.
An active process of forming a new cabinet has begun in Romania under the leadership of the newly appointed Prime Minister Eugen Tomac.
