In the New Juaben North Municipality in Ghana, the education directorate has appealed for additional desks and chairs for schools where up to four students are forced to share one desk. MyJoyOnline reports.
Furniture shortage in schools
Okyere Boateng Samuel, head of the Planning and Statistics Department at the education directorate, said that the shortage of school furniture remains a problem for some institutions. According to him, this worsens learning conditions, creates an additional burden for students and teachers, and complicates an effective educational process.
The official called on the government, relevant authorities, organizations, and other stakeholders to provide the municipality with more desks and chairs. He noted that a sufficient amount of furniture could improve students' comfort, the learning environment, and the quality of education.

More than a thousand chairs for schools
The appeal came after the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly handed over more than a thousand chairs to the education directorate for further distribution among schools. Samuel welcomed the assistance but stressed that it does not cover the needs of institutions experiencing furniture shortages.
Municipal chief executive Samuel Adongo said that the provision of furniture is part of measures being implemented following a government directive. Under it, metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies must allocate part of the District Assemblies Common Fund to this initiative.
Adongo said that during school visits, he saw students sitting on classroom floors due to a shortage of desks and chairs. The donated chairs are to be distributed among institutions identified by the education directorate as having furniture shortages.
