Two workers were killed following a fire and subsequent explosion at the Ritom hydroelectric power plant in the village of Piotta in southern Switzerland. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the canton of Ticino, Deutsche Welle reports, citing local authorities.

Fire trapped workers

According to police, a report of a fire at the Ritom hydroelectric power plant was received at around 9:30 a.m. local time. The fire trapped two workers inside the facility. An explosion occurred at the plant shortly afterward, causing significant damage to the building.

Both men sustained severe injuries and died from them shortly afterward. Authorities said that one of the deceased was a 55-year-old Swiss citizen. The identity of the second worker had not yet been established at the time of publication.

Investigation into the cause of the incident

State prosecutors have launched an investigation into the causes of the fatal incident. The hydroelectric power plant is owned by Swiss railway operator SBB. Reconstruction is currently underway at the facility, which is about 100 years old, as part of a plan to reconfigure the plant.
