Scaffolding falls onto cars near construction site in Sydney — ABC News Australia

In the Ultimo area of Sydney, Australia, part of the scaffolding at a construction site fell onto parked cars on Wattle Street. The incident occurred on Saturday shortly before 6:45 p.m.; no one was injured, ABC News reports.

SafeWork NSW order

According to the SafeWork NSW regulator, inspectors arrived at the scene. The agency issued a number of regulatory orders, including a prohibition notice to the site operators.

Security camera footage shows scaffolding giving way in strong winds and narrowly missing drivers on the street. A local resident, Lisa, who lives a few houses away from the site, said she heard a loud bang and initially thought a sheet of metal was being dragged along the road. After watching the footage, she suggested that the structure in front of the building had not been properly secured.

Second incident in over a month

This is the second safety incident at the site in over a month. In August, a wall and roof collapsed onto a neighboring gas station at the same construction site. Two men, aged in their 60s and 30s, respectively, sustained serious injuries: they were pulled from under the rubble and taken to St Vincent's Hospital and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Another five people were assessed by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.

Work at the site, according to Lisa, resumed only recently after a break of several weeks. The building previously housed a rehearsal studio, but it was approved for demolition to make way for a multi-storey mixed-use complex. Macroview Projects, which manages the project, was asked to comment on the new incident.
