Man in Singapore sentenced for abusing 11 girls — Channel NewsAsia
In Singapore, a 71-year-old man was sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually abusing 11 girls. The victims included his daughter, granddaughters, nieces and students at a tuition centre he ran with his wife. According to Channel NewsAsia, the crimes continued from 1990 to 2023, and the youngest victim was five years old.
Guilty plea and previous convictions
The man pleaded guilty to 10 charges, including rape, sexual assault and unnatural sexual acts. The court also took another 23 charges into consideration when sentencing him.
According to case materials, he began sexually abusing his own daughter in 1997, when she was six or seven years old. When the girl turned 15, he raped her and asked her not to tell anyone so as not to destroy the family.
The man had previously served sentences twice for similar sexual crimes against minors — in 1999 and 2020. The full scale of his actions became known after he began abusing his granddaughters following his second release from prison. In 2023, he molested his five-year-old granddaughter, showed pornography to her sister and sexually abused her.
After the granddaughters told their mother about what they had experienced, the convicted man’s daughter also reported the crimes she had suffered in childhood.

Health condition and court decision
The prosecution sought a prison term of between 32 and 36 years, while the defence argued for 15 years. Judge Mavis Chion said that neither position took into account the principle of totality of sentences, under which the overall term must be fair and not excessively harsh.
The court took into account the convicted man’s age and his illness — myelofibrosis, a rare form of blood cancer. According to the latest medical assessment, the likelihood that he will live beyond 2031 is 13%.
At the same time, the court rejected the defence’s request for judicial mercy. Because of the man’s age and health condition, the judge also did not impose an additional prison term in lieu of caning.
A report by the Institute of Mental Health identified the convicted man as a paedophile with a sexual attraction to prepubescent girls and stated that he poses a danger to children.
