Discussions on the integration of Kurdish forces are underway in Kobane, Syria
In Kobane, Syria—also known as Ain al-Arab—efforts are continuing to integrate the Kurdish region in the north of the country and its fighters into state structures. According to France 24, the network’s correspondent, Wasim Nasr, covered a meeting between Amin Saleh, commander of the Kurdish security forces “Asayish,” and Majdiddin al-Sheikh, head of the Ain al-Arab district.
Syrian government forces also traveled to Kobane in early July for talks with local Kurdish officials on security matters. Syria’s new government, led by President Ahmed al-Sharaa, faces challenges related to security integration, institution-building, and governance in the country’s northern regions.
Kobane is located in a Kurdish-majority region in northern Syria. The city gained international attention during the war when the Islamic State group attempted to capture it.
An important transportation artery in the region is the M4 highway, which connects Aleppo with areas inhabited by the Kurdish population and runs almost parallel to Syria’s border with Turkey. It was opened in March in an effort to restore stability following clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish fighters that occurred after the fall of Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. According to France 24, more than 5,000 fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces are still stationed at observation posts along the highway.
