In the U.S., lawyers are prohibited from charging for time saved by artificial intelligence

In the U.S., lawyers are prohibited from charging for time saved by artificial intelligence

The Alabama State Bar Association in the United States has clarified that attorneys cannot bill clients for hours saved through the use of artificial intelligence.

However, attorneys may only bill for the time spent reviewing, correcting, and refining the results produced by AI.

The new guidelines emphasize that the use of generative artificial intelligence does not alter attorneys’ professional responsibilities. They remain fully responsible for the documents they prepare, must verify all generated legal references, and must comply with client confidentiality requirements.

The Bar Association also recommended that lawyers use corporate or closed AI systems, as free services may pose risks to attorney-client privilege.

The recommendations specifically emphasized that increased efficiency achieved through AI cannot be used as a basis for inflating the cost of legal services.
