Nepal says it will not seek climate compensation from China
Nepal does not intend to seek compensation for climate justice from any individual country, including China. Nepalese Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal said this during a meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming, ECNS reports, citing a statement by the Chinese Embassy in Kathmandu.
Compensation through international mechanisms
According to Khanal, Nepal will seek compensation from the international community within the framework of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. He noted that Nepal and China share the natural ecosystem of the Himalayas and that both countries are affected by climate change.
The Nepalese foreign minister also said that his country shares China’s position on the international community’s shared responsibility for combating climate change.

China’s reaction
Khanal thanked China for its assistance in difficult times and expressed condolences to the Chinese government and people following large-scale flash floods and landslides that occurred in the border region on August 26.
On the same day, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that Beijing is ready to strengthen cooperation with Nepal and the international community to prevent and mitigate the negative effects of climate change. He was commenting on reports that some people in Nepal had demanded climate compensation from the United States, India and China, which were described in those reports as the largest emitters of greenhouse gases. According to Guo, China was also seriously affected by the cross-border disaster.
