Naryshkin warned of a real risk of a large-scale conflict in Eurasia
Sergey Naryshkin, head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service, stated that the risk of a large-scale conflict across the entire Eurasian region is “entirely real.” According to him, this raises “the gravest concerns.”
Naryshkin made these remarks during the 22nd meeting of the Council of Heads of Security and Intelligence Agencies of the CIS countries.
“According to our information, European leaders believe in controlled escalation—a strategy of balancing on the brink developed by Western intelligence agencies as far back as the Cold War,” said the head of the SVR.
He asserts that political propaganda creates such a stark picture of the world that politicians themselves become its hostages. According to Naryshkin, as tensions continue to rise, even a minor incident could lead to a large-scale war.
“Diplomacy no longer works in this situation, and states are literally sliding into total war,” he stated.
Naryshkin also mentioned the European Union’s defense strategy, adopted in 2025. According to him, the document calls for, among other things, preparedness for a large-scale armed conflict by 2030, and it identifies Russia as the main threat.
The head of the SVR asserts that European society is not ready for war with Russia. At the same time, he said, European politicians and corporations are using the “myth of a threat from the East” to increase military spending, shift industry toward military production, and modernize military, road, and port infrastructure.
Naryshkin called on the security agencies and intelligence services of the CIS countries to strengthen their own collective security system without waiting for “the spiral of escalation in Eurasia to reach its limit.”
Earlier, a Russian drone flew to attack the office of SBU Chairman Poklad.
On September 4, a Russian drone struck a building of the Security Service of Ukraine near the “Zoloti Vorota” metro station in central Kyiv. A fire broke out at the scene.
In the Khmelnytskyi region, debris from a downed Russian strike drone caused a fire in the warehouse of one of the local enterprises. The fire covered an area of 200 square meters, according to Serhiy Tyurin, head of the regional military administration.
Over the past day in Mykolaiv Oblast, 15 private homes were damaged as a result of attacks by Russian Shahed-type strike UAVs. A social services building and three cars were also damaged, according to Mykolaiv Regional State Administration Head Heorhiy Reshetilov.
