Amendments submitted in the US regarding mention of India in Russia sanctions bill

In the United States, lawmakers have submitted amendments to a bill on sanctions against Russia, the aggressor state. One of them provides for adding the names of Moscow's largest trading partners, including India, to the text of the document.

Proposed changes

As The Hindu International reports, another amendment proposes completely removing from the document the section on imposing tariffs. Lawmakers submitted these changes within a tight timeframe.

Sanctions act

The US Senate approved the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act last month by 86 votes to 11. The document provides for sanctions not only against the Russian leadership and energy sector, but also against the so-called shadow fleet of vessels.

According to the description in the report, these vessels help Moscow evade sanctions when supplying oil. India is mentioned in the proposed amendment as one of Russia's leading trading partners. The report does not specify exactly what wording concerning trading partners is proposed for inclusion in the bill.
