A plot to carry out an attack at an event attended by Trump was uncovered in the U.S.
U.S. law enforcement officials have charged eight individuals suspected of conspiring to attack an event attended by President Donald Trump. The case involves a possible attack on a mixed martial arts tournament that was planned to take place at the White House on the president’s birthday.
A federal grand jury in Columbus has charged these men with conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, as well as conspiracy to commit murder on federal government property and the murder of a public official. If convicted, they face life in prison.
According to the Department of Justice, the suspects planned to launch drones carrying explosives near the event venue to trigger an evacuation, and then deploy snipers to target “high-value targets” as they left the scene.
Authorities had previously reported the arrest of seven suspects. The eighth suspect—a 21-year-old man who, according to prosecutors, was to act as a sniper—was arrested this week in West Virginia.
The event, organized by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), took place on June 14 at a specially constructed arena near the White House; it was attended by Trump, members of his family, and several government officials.
Although the event coincided with Trump’s 80th birthday, it was officially held as part of the celebration of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, even though Independence Day is observed on July 4.
