In the U.S., a mother suspected of postpartum psychosis is on trial for the murder of three children

Lindsay Clancy, 36, is on trial in the U.S. for the deaths of her three young children, who were found strangled in the basement of their home. The woman admits to killing her sons and daughter but claims she acted under the influence of postpartum psychosis, which is why the defense is arguing that she suffers from a mental disorder.

Prosecutors suggest that the American woman’s suicide attempt after killing her children was staged, while her ex-husband complains that medical professionals allegedly did not pay enough attention to his wife’s condition.

Lindsay and Patrick Clancy raised three children together—five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Cullen. The woman worked as a nurse at a Boston hospital and experienced anxiety after the birth of her first two children.

Her symptoms returned and worsened after the birth of their third child in 2022, according to her now-ex-husband. She sought help from a psychiatrist and other specialists, who prescribed her 13 medications.

Starting in September 2022, Lindsay suffered from insomnia, anxiety, and depression. A few months later, she complained of panic attacks, numbness, suicidal thoughts, and a growing fear that “something terrible might happen,” Patrick said.

The mother of many children admitted that she had thought about harming her children. She documented her symptoms in a journal, where she wrote about “horrible obsessive thoughts.”

“I want to feel love and a connection with all my children… I just want to feel happy. I want to be able to relax and take care of my children. And when they go to bed at night, to relax deeply and spend time with Patrick, then fall into a deep sleep for 8 hours, wake up, and devote 1.5 hours to myself.

“We planned so carefully and wanted Kel so much. I want to be able to give him all the love he deserves,” reads an entry from the woman’s note-taking app dated October 25, 2022.

Before the murder, the American woman also wrote: “Medications stole my motherhood and my life… prescription drugs stole me from my own body.”

In late 2022, she voluntarily enrolled in an outpatient program for postpartum depression, and a month later, she spent five days in the psychiatric ward of a hospital.

Lindsay’s condition reached a critical point on January 24, 2023, according to Patrick. At that time, she heard a “compelling, unknown male voice” telling her that she had to die, but that her children would suffer as a result.

According to the investigation, on that same day, the American woman strangled her two older children with elastic fitness bands. The youngest child sustained injuries that led to his death three days later.

Afterward, their mother cut her wrists and neck and jumped out of a second-story window. She survived but suffered spinal cord injuries that left her partially paralyzed.

The children were found in the basement, and their injured mother was found in front of the family home in an affluent Boston suburb by their father.

Prosecutors are now charging Lindsay with the murder of her three children. According to investigators, the 36-year-old woman meticulously planned the murders and, to that end, fabricated an excuse for her husband to leave the house.

On the day of the tragedy, the woman took her older children out to build a snowman and sent her husband a message suggesting they order takeout. Law enforcement believes this was part of the murder plot.

“She knew exactly what she was doing,” Shenen Buckingham, an assistant district attorney, told the jury.

According to the investigation, the woman’s suicide attempt was staged. As evidence, the court presented search queries from the family’s computer, which showed attempts to learn about methods of suicide, psychiatric medications, detoxification programs, mania, and concerns about a psychiatrist overprescribing medication.

Four days before the murder, Lindsay searched on her phone for “can a sociopath be cured,” and in her notes, she complained of depression.

During the trial, it emerged that the woman had an undiagnosed bipolar disorder as well as postpartum depression, which could ultimately have led to psychosis. At the same time, the medical professionals she had consulted on multiple occasions failed to communicate effectively with one another.

Now, Lindsay’s ex-husband will testify on the defense’s behalf. Earlier this year, he filed a lawsuit alleging that the doctors either failed to monitor her reaction to medication “or ignored the deterioration of her mental state.”

In addition, Patrick released a written statement in support of his ex-wife.

“My family was the best thing that ever happened to me. They gave me a purpose, but I never took it for granted. Now, where that purpose once was, there is a huge void [...]

I want to ask everyone to find it in your hearts to forgive Lindsay, just as I have. The real Lindsay was generously loving and caring toward everyone,” the man said.

The hearings have been emotionally charged—the American woman broke down in tears several times while her ex-husband testified about the day of the tragedy and when the forensic medical expert described her children’s fatal injuries. In the latter instance, the judge even had to call a recess.

Lindsay has admitted to killing her children but denies guilt, citing postpartum psychosis. If found guilty, she faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

If, however, the court finds her not criminally responsible, she will likely be sent to a psychiatric facility for treatment.
