An Nvidia employee was detained in Taiwan for smuggling chips to China — Bloomberg
Taiwanese law enforcement officials detained an Nvidia employee as part of an investigation into the alleged smuggling of artificial intelligence chips to China.
According to Bloomberg, on July 24, investigators searched the employee’s residence and Nvidia’s office in Taipei. Subsequently, a court authorized his detention on suspicion of document forgery and breach of trust. The suspect’s name has not been officially disclosed.
Taiwan’s prosecutor’s office confirmed that the searches were conducted as part of the investigation but has not filed charges against Nvidia or any other company.
According to Bloomberg, this may be the first known case in which an Nvidia employee has been detained in connection with the illegal shipment of AI chips to China. The U.S. has restricted the export of such chips to China since 2022 due to the risks of their military use. Nvidia stated that the company complies with U.S. export control regulations and sells its products only to verified partners.
Bloomberg reported this, citing sources familiar with the matter.
As a reminder, China’s largest chipmakers, SMIC and Hua Hong Semiconductor, along with several companies linked to Huawei, plan to significantly expand production of advanced semiconductors due to growing demand from the artificial intelligence industry.
