Ancient 2,400-Year-Old Structures Found at Reservoir Bottom in Turkey

In the Eyl district of Diyarbakır province in eastern Turkey, researchers have discovered unique historical structures at the bottom of a local reservoir, TRT Haber reports.

The archaeological sites, estimated to be around 2,400 years old, had long been hidden beneath the water. Specialized underwater search and rescue (SAK) teams from the provincial gendarmerie conducted dives and detailed surveys of the objects.

Eyl “has been home to many civilizations from ancient times to the present,” making this discovery particularly valuable.

Construction of the reservoir in this area began in 1986, with water filling completed in 1997. Today, the artificial body of water serves as a critical source of drinking and industrial water for the large city of Diyarbakır.

The preservation of monuments in the region has been challenging: in 1995, the tombs of the prophets Hazrat Zulkifl and Hazrat Ilyas were relocated to Nebi Harun Hill. However, much of the cultural heritage remained underwater, including some rock-cut tombs as well as historical structures such as a mosque, a madrasa, and a hammam.

It should be recalled that archaeologists also discovered unique finds on islands near the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station. They have recently made new revelations regarding a famous Spanish treasure as well.
