Activists gathered in Washington for a summit to show support for Ukraine
The ninth “Summit for Ukraine” has begun in Washington—an annual gathering of American activists and supporters of Ukraine. During the event, participants are discussing continued support for Kyiv and holding meetings with representatives of the U.S. Congress.
The event, which will run through September 16, is attended by hundreds of delegates from various states, including veterans, representatives of civic, religious, and charitable organizations, and family members of American volunteers who died defending Ukraine.
From September 14–16, participants will hold meetings with members of Congress. Key issues include strengthening sanctions against Russia, the return of abducted Ukrainian children, the development of a defense partnership, and security support for Ukraine.
The “Ukraine Action Summit” is organized by the American Coalition for Ukraine—a nonpartisan coalition of more than 50 American nonprofit organizations.
The event is held twice a year and brings together Ukraine advocates from various states in Washington, D.C., for briefings, training, and direct advocacy with U.S. lawmakers.
As Dmytro Senik, Ukraine’s acting ambassador to the U.S., stated during the opening of the “Ukraine Action Summit,” Ukraine is prepared to refrain from striking Russian infrastructure if its Western partners ensure that Russia does the same.
Senik called for intensifying sanctions and economic pressure on Russia, continuing military and financial support for Ukraine, and focusing on strengthening air defense capabilities.
Speaking about discussions regarding the war’s impact on global energy markets, Senik emphasized that Russia itself started the war and was the first to choose the path of destroying Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
He noted that it was Ukraine that proposed to its partners to secure an agreement with Russia to cease attacks on critical infrastructure.
“If our partners are ready to ensure that Russia truly refrains from striking our power grid, other energy facilities, critical infrastructure, and food supply routes, then, of course, we are ready to ensure a corresponding cessation of our strikes,” Senik said.
He emphasized that the issue of peace should not begin and end with demands on Ukraine.
