The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Venezuela has risen
As a result of two devastating earthquakes that struck on the evening of June 24, at least 164 people were killed and another 971 were injured.
This was reported by the country’s acting president, Delsi Rodríguez. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, were the strongest to hit the country in the last hundred years, causing significant damage to infrastructure and the collapse of dozens of residential buildings in many regions.
The coastal state of La Guaira, north of Caracas, was hit the hardest; additional rescue teams are currently being urgently deployed there to conduct intensive search operations and rescue people from under the rubble. Due to the extensive damage to buildings, authorities were forced to completely close the country’s main international airport, and the tremors were so powerful that they were felt even as far as 1,700 kilometers away in the Brazilian Amazon.
