Venezuela frees dozens of political prisoners during holiday amnesty

On Thursday, January 1, 2026, the Venezuelan government released at least 80 political prisoners, including one individual with U.S. ties, according to rights groups. This release is part of customary holiday amnesties despite an ongoing intensified crackdown on dissent in the country.

In late December, approximately 120 detainees were also freed, bringing the total number of political prisoners released in the past month to nearly 200. Among those freed was Jonathan Torres Duque, a Venezuelan granted Temporary Protected Status in the U.S., who was detained in Venezuela in late 2024. However, more than 800 political prisoners remain incarcerated.

The situation remains delicate as President Nicolás Maduro’s government persistently suppresses opposition voices. These periodic releases may indicate potential openings for negotiations or increased international pressure on the Venezuelan regime.
