In Vienna, a cruise ship crashed into a lock; 14 passengers were injured
On the morning of July 24, in the Austrian capital, the cruise ship MS Anna Katharina collided with the “Freudenau” lock, injuring 14 passengers.
There were about 200 people on board the ship. All 14 of the injured sustained minor injuries, and six of them were hospitalized.
“There were no seriously injured people, and no one was in critical condition,” said rescue service spokesperson Daniel Melcher.
The bow of the ship sustained significant damage as a result of the collision. Upon arriving at the scene, rescue workers checked to ensure no one was in the water, secured the vessel, and inspected the hull for possible holes and flooding.
Law enforcement officials are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident on suspicion of causing bodily injury through negligence. The exact cause of the incident has not yet been determined; however, according to media reports, one possible cause is a technical malfunction. The 49-year-old captain of the vessel, a Bulgarian citizen, is expected to give a statement to the police.
