Hungary will grant asylum to Ukrainian draft dodgers despite the EU's decision

Hungary will grant asylum to Ukrainian draft dodgers despite the EU's decision

The Hungarian government reserves the right to continue granting asylum status to all Ukrainian men of draft age who enter the country.

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced this decision, clarifying that this step is primarily aimed at supporting ethnic Hungarians from Transcarpathia. According to him, Budapest voted against restrictions on Ukrainian conscripts at the EU level and considers it necessary to continue providing them with assistance.

These actions by the Hungarian authorities contradict the new EU rules adopted in late July. According to the decision from Brussels, temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens has been extended until March 4, 2028; however, newly arrived men of draft age are eligible for it only if they have no issues with their military registration documents. The Hungarian prime minister called this EU approach unworthy and incomprehensible toward people fleeing a war zone.
