Ukrainian scientists have joined a new EU project on polar snow

The National Antarctic Scientific Center (NASC) has joined the European Union’s large-scale initiative “Polar Snow, Permafrost, and Continental Ice in a Changing World.”

The main goal of the research is to predict the rate of climate change in polar regions and develop effective strategies for adapting to global warming.

The project brings together 14 leading European institutions specializing in climate modeling, with the Norwegian Research Institute (NORCE) serving as the coordinator.

The research is scheduled to last four years and is funded by the EU Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure, and the Environment.

The Ukrainian station “Akademik Vernadsky” was selected as one of the key research sites because it is located in one of Antarctica’s “hottest” spots.

It is here that temperatures are rising the fastest, allowing scientists to record the most radical environmental changes in real time.

Our researchers will focus on studying the physical properties of the snow cover in the Antarctic coastal zone, where the greatest transformation of glaciers is expected.

Scientists will collect unique data on the state of the cryosphere, which will serve as the basis for creating highly accurate global models of our planet’s future state.

Denis Pishnyak, Head of the Department of Atmospheric and Geospace Physics at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, emphasized that participation in the project provides access to state-of-the-art equipment.

According to the scientist, “there will also be an opportunity to participate in the processing of modern modeling data and conduct interesting experiments with the latest equipment.”

The results of the Ukrainian polar researchers’ work will help the international community better understand the mechanisms of continental ice melt.

The knowledge gained will allow for the refinement of models of changes in the polar environment, which is critically important for predicting global sea levels.

Scientists have presented a new hypothesis regarding the construction of the Pyramid of Cheops

Recently, at the Grand Egyptian Museum, staff began assembling an ancient wooden boat that belonged to Pharaoh Cheops in front of the public.

As a reminder, in Egypt near the city of Luxor, a joint Egyptian-British mission identified the ancient tomb of King Thutmose II. This was the first discovery of a pharaoh’s tomb in over 100 years.

Last November, archaeologists made a sensational discovery in the necropolis of the ancient Egyptian city of Asyut. In the tomb of the powerful official Jefhehapi I, a secret chamber was discovered where his daughter, the priestess Idi, was laid to rest.
