Ukrainians of draft age may lose their temporary protection in the Czech Republic
The Czech opposition party "Freedom and Direct Democracy" (SPD) is finalizing a new draft of the law on foreigners, which significantly tightens the conditions for foreign nationals to stay in the country.
This was reported by the party’s leader, Tomio Okamura.
At the same time, Prague has initiated a discussion at the European Union level regarding changes to the status of certain categories of refugees.
Tomio Okamura, Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies and leader of the SPD, announced that the Czech Republic is currently negotiating with the EU to end temporary protection for Ukrainian men of conscription age.
To implement this step, the Czech side needs the consolidated support of other European Union member states.
The politician noted that current European Union rules do not allow the Czech Republic to unilaterally abolish the temporary protection mechanism, and that ongoing negotiations regarding the possible termination of protection for Ukrainian men are “progressing slowly.”
The Czech parliamentarian holds a radical position regarding the continued stay of foreigners in the country and advocates for the complete abolition of the current preferential conditions.
Okamura emphasized that he advocates for the immediate termination of temporary protection for all Ukrainians in the Czech Republic. In arguing his position, the leader of the political party added several controversial accusations against migrants.
“There are too many Ukrainians here, and we have to do something about it,” he says.
According to opposition representatives, the stabilization of the migration situation in Europe directly depends on the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine.
The politician stated that the main path to ending temporary protection for Ukrainians must be the end of the war in Ukraine.
According to Okamura, once the war ends, the temporary protection mechanism will automatically lose its purpose, and Ukrainians will be forced to either return home or apply for standard residence permits in the Czech Republic.
