Jigawa State government reports ₦29.19 billion in education spending in Q1
The government of Jigawa State in Nigeria said it spent ₦29,193,742,109.44 on education in the first quarter of 2026. State authorities denied reports of zero education spending for the period, which had previously been published by TheCable.
Premium Times Nigeria published the relevant press release from the Jigawa government. It was signed by the governor’s chief press secretary, Hamisu Mohammed Gumel, and is dated September 3, 2026.
Budget report data
According to the state government, the Jigawa first-quarter budget implementation report lists ₦29.19 billion under “Function 709 — Education.” The state’s original education budget for 2026, according to the data cited in the press release, was ₦231.77 billion, and first-quarter spending amounted to 12.6% of that sum.

The government said the report recorded ₦10.17 billion in spending on pre-primary and primary education, ₦3.64 billion on secondary education, and ₦4.94 billion on tertiary education. According to the authorities, no spending on post-secondary non-tertiary education was recorded in the first quarter.
The state government’s position
The press release also separately listed ₦14.59 billion in personnel costs in the education sector and ₦13.42 billion in capital expenditure. The largest share of capital expenditure — ₦8.83 billion — was assigned in the report to the education category without specifying the level.
The Jigawa government acknowledged that there was no spending in the first quarter under certain education-sector budget items. At the same time, the authorities insist that this does not mean total spending was zero and called on TheCable, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and other media outlets to explain the basis for the ₦0.00 figure or correct it. The press release also said that the quarterly report had been published on the budget ministry’s website as early as April.
