Syria’s Government Faces a Daunting Challenge in Reunifying the Country

Reintegrating Syria after years of conflict cannot be achieved through force alone. Analysts argue that a successful reunification effort requires a comprehensive strategy that balances political inclusion, security measures and careful management of external risks.

The first crucial element is the creation of an inclusive national vision for what the Syrian state will look like. Many armed groups remain unwilling to disarm because they are uncertain about the nature of the state they are being asked to rejoin.

The second component involves a combination of limited force and persuasion, aimed at gradually bringing semi-autonomous regions back under a unified national framework without triggering widespread escalation.

The third and equally important factor is avoiding actions that could invite foreign intervention. Past miscalculations by the central authorities have already led to strong external responses, further complicating the situation.

Experts say the central government faces a daunting task in merging all these elements into a single, coherent strategy. Without such an approach, ending fragmentation and achieving a relatively unified and stable Syria will remain out of reach.
