In Estonia, the number of people willing to serve in the military turned out to be twice the target

In 2026, all of the more than 700 recruits in Estonia who will begin their mandatory military service on July 13 were volunteers, including 32 women.

According to the Defense Resources Agency, this fully meets this year’s maximum conscription quota; however, approximately 1,500 additional applicants had to be turned away due to limited capacity, and a competitive selection process was conducted, giving priority to those planning a future military career.

The current intake turned out to be about three times smaller than the usual planned numbers due to the reallocation of the army’s training resources toward the professional development of current service members and the training of new instructors. Assigned to various branches of the military, the conscripts will master military specialties; in particular, some of them will undergo training as operators of the German IRIS-T SLM air defense systems.
