A new model of governance has emerged in Iran following Khamenei’s death — NYT

Following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, a new system of governance has emerged in the country, in which the military plays a key role.

This is reported by The New York Times.

According to sources, his son Mojtaba Khamenei has formally become the new leader, but actual power is not concentrated in a single pair of hands. Decisions regarding security, war, and international negotiations are made by a collective leadership dominated by generals.

This primarily refers to the commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who determine the state’s strategic course. Mojtaba Khamenei himself performs mainly a coordinating role and approves decisions that have already been made.

The situation is further complicated by his health—after the attack on his residence, he sustained injuries and is in isolation, which limits his direct influence on the country’s governance.

At the same time, according to analysts, the Iranian government and president have been sidelined from strategic decision-making and are focused on domestic issues, such as the economy and maintaining stability.

Thus, there has been a redistribution of power in the country in favor of the military elite, while the role of the clergy is gradually diminishing.

Iran has stated that a possible ceasefire in the war with the U.S. would only make sense if the naval blockade is lifted and Israel ceases hostilities.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington is not setting strict deadlines for achieving a ceasefire or resuming negotiations with Iran.

Prior to this, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Iran has repeatedly violated the ceasefire since its implementation between Washington and Tehran. According to Trump, there have been numerous incidents that cast doubt on Iran’s compliance with the ceasefire agreements.
