12-year-old boy dies in car-train collision in Ireland

In County Mayo, Ireland, a 12-year-old boy died after a car collided with a train at a railway crossing. The crash occurred in Kiltibo, near Ballyhaunis.

Collision at the crossing

As MyJoyOnline reports, citing the BBC, Irish police and emergency services received a report of a collision between a train and a car at around 20:45 local time on Thursday.

The boy was a passenger in the car. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. The driver, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital by ambulance. According to police, his injuries are not life-threatening.

Examination of the scene

All train passengers safely left the train. Collision investigation specialists will conduct a technical examination of the crash site, while the road in the area remains closed.

The coroner has been informed of the boy's death. His body was taken to the mortuary at Mayo University Hospital, where a post-mortem examination is to be conducted. Irish police urged witnesses to come forward with information.
