In Spain, a massive airport has become a ghost town

In Spain, a large-scale airport with a runway approximately 4 kilometers long was built, but it was never fully operational. As a result, the facility has effectively become an abandoned infrastructure complex.

In Spain, the Ciudad Real Airport was initially planned as one of the country’s major projects. The goal was to establish an airport south of Madrid that could relieve congestion at the capital’s Barajas Airport, serve low-cost carriers, and create a new economic hub in the region.

According to several sources, the investment amounted to approximately one billion euros.

The airport’s runway was approximately 4 kilometers long and 60 meters wide, making it suitable even for the world’s largest passenger aircraft, including the Airbus A380. The terminal was designed to handle several million passengers annually, and the complex also included large industrial areas. It was built as a major aviation hub, but reality had other plans.

As it turned out, the airport opened at an inopportune time: the 2008 financial crisis brought the construction and investment boom in Spain to a halt, and airlines did not see sufficient demand to operate out of Ciudad Real.

Its remote location relative to Madrid also worked against the project, as it could not compete with the capital’s Barajas Airport.

Although several airlines began operating there, none of them was able to sustain the airport’s operations for long. Vueling’s last commercial flight departed in the fall of 2011 from Ciudad Real to Barcelona, after which passenger service effectively ceased. The facility subsequently became one of Europe’s most famous abandoned airports.

Later, at an auction held as part of bankruptcy proceedings, the facility—which had previously been valued at around one billion euros—received a bid of only 10,000 euros.

In 2019, the Spanish Civil Aviation Authority once again authorized its use, after which it began to be used for aircraft storage, maintenance, and occasional flights.

During the coronavirus pandemic, the airport was temporarily used as an aircraft parking area due to its large available capacity.

According to the latest data, Ciudad Real remains a registered airport but does not function as a full-fledged passenger hub and is used only on a limited basis for private and special flights, reports vezess.
