A cruise ship passenger in Spain has tested positive for hantavirus
A Spanish citizen tested positive for hantavirus after taking a cruise on which an outbreak occurred. The patient is in isolation at a Madrid hospital and is asymptomatic.
This was reported by Spain’s Minister of Health on social media platform X.
According to the minister, a total of 14 Spanish citizens were traveling on the Oceanwide Expeditions vessel.
After testing, one passenger tested positive for hantavirus, while the other 13 Spaniards tested negative.
The infected passenger is in isolation at a hospital in Madrid and has no symptoms of the disease.
The cruise ship was on a route following a trip to southern Argentina, where a fatal outbreak of the disease among passengers had been reported.
Following the incident, the ship anchored near the Canary Islands on May 10, after which all passengers were evacuated and transported to their countries of origin.
Hantavirus is a viral disease that is usually transmitted to humans through contact with rodents or their secretions. In severe cases, it can cause serious lung or kidney damage.
Medical personnel continue to monitor all passengers who were on board the ship.
In France, one of the five repatriated passengers from the cruise ship MV Hondius was admitted to the intensive care unit at Bichat Hospital. The woman is in stable condition but has tested positive for hantavirus.
In Italy, two young people were placed under a 45-day quarantine after a flight on which a passenger infected with hantavirus was present. The decision was made as a precautionary measure to control the possible spread of the infection.
