In Italy, tax authorities will launch an investigation into Formula 1 drivers

Italian tax authorities have launched investigations into Formula 1 drivers and teams who may have earned income during the championship races held in the country.

This was reported by RacingNews365, citing information from the financial police.

The Italian Financial Police has sent official requests to the drivers, demanding that they file tax returns for 2025 and provide explanations regarding income received while participating in the Grand Prix. The athletes are also urged to contact the tax authorities either personally or through representatives.

It is separately noted that the audits may also cover previous years to verify that foreign competitors have paid their taxes in full.

Under Italian law, athletes who earn income while competing in the country are required to declare and pay taxes on these funds. Tax authorities plan to analyze drivers’ contracts and sponsorship agreements to determine actual income amounts.

If unpaid taxes exceed 50,000 euros, such cases may be classified as criminal offenses. In addition to debt, violators face penalties.

In recent years, Formula 1 races in Italy have been held at the circuits in Monza, Imola, and Mugello, which may also be subject to scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Formula 1 management continues to finalize the calendar for future seasons and is considering the possibility of rotating or reinstating certain Grands Prix into the championship schedule.

Formula 1 continues to attract the attention of the world’s leading automakers. Following a series of new partnerships and the launch of factory programs, another major player—the Chinese company BYD—may join the prestigious racing series. According to industry sources, the electric vehicle manufacturer is considering participation in various types of motorsports, including Formula 1 and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
