Italian senator criticizes house arrest for attempted rape suspect
Daniela Sbrollini, a senator from the centrist Italia Viva party, criticized the transfer to house arrest of a 19-year-old man detained on suspicion of attempted rape of a girl in Imperia. According to ANSA English, the man was released from custody after expressing remorse for what he allegedly did.
Senator's statement
Sbrollini, who represents her party on the parliamentary commission on femicide, called the decision completely unacceptable. She pointed to the case as the second instance in which a suspect in sexual violence against a girl was released from custody after expressing regret.

Previous case in Turin
The case in Imperia was preceded by an incident in Turin. There, a 42-year-old Bangladeshi citizen was detained on suspicion of attacking a 13-year-old girl and was later released from custody. As ANSA English reports, the judge took into account that the man expressed deep remorse for what he had done and also had difficulties controlling his impulses.
Following the decision in the Turin case, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio sent inspectors to the city's court. The preliminary hearing judge who ruled in favor of the suspect also faced a wave of death threats.
