China launches first intelligent methanol-powered supertanker
In Dalian, Liaoning province, China has commissioned the world’s first intelligent methanol-powered supertanker named "Kaito" into commercial service. The vessel was designed and built entirely in China, marking a significant technological milestone in the country’s shipbuilding sector.
The tanker measures 333 metres in length and can carry approximately 2.1 million barrels of crude oil. It is intended for routes between the Middle East and the Far East. Equipped with a dual-fuel system developed domestically, the ship uses methanol fuel, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 92% and sulfur oxides by 99% compared to conventional fuels.
Additionally, the tanker features intelligent control systems that enhance operational efficiency and safety. This advancement signals a new era for environmentally friendly and technologically advanced maritime shipping.
