A Russian spy ring was convicted in Odessa; the ringleader received a life sentence

A court has found two military personnel and a civilian guilty of treason committed by an organized group under martial law. The organizer of an espionage network in Odesa was sentenced to life in prison. His accomplice and the civilian participant each received 15-year prison terms with confiscation of property.

This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

Prosecutors from the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Defense in the Southern Region proved that a representative of the aggressor state recruited one of the servicemen after he deserted his unit. Subsequently, he recruited another serviceman, who was also on leave, and a local resident to collaborate. Due to a lack of stable income, all three agreed to work for the enemy.

The organizer maintained contact with a Russian intelligence handler, coordinated the group’s actions, provided training on secrecy, collected and transmitted information, and distributed the funds received among the participants.

Between April and June 2024, they used “Telegram” to transmit data on the locations of air defense systems, military units, checkpoints of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Territorial Defense Forces, critical infrastructure facilities, medical and educational institutions, as well as the routes of military equipment movements in Odesa. To verify the information, they used Google Maps screenshots with the coordinates of the sites.

A civilian member of the group changed her appearance while carrying out tasks and used a pink wig for cover.

In June 2024, law enforcement officers detained the group members. At the request of prosecutors, the court imposed a preventive measure on them—detention without the right to bail.
