An oil tanker was attacked in the Strait of Hormuz
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported a new attack on an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz. The attack damaged the engine room of the vessel, which was located off the coast of Oman.
According to the agency, the incident occurred 11 nautical miles (about 20 km) east of Lima, Oman.
“The UKMTO received a report of an incident involving a merchant vessel 11 nautical miles (about 20 km – ed.) east of Lima, Oman. The vessel was struck by a projectile that damaged the engine room,” the statement said.
At this time, there is no information regarding fatalities or injuries among the crew members, nor regarding environmental damage.
The UKMTO noted that the circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the relevant authorities. The agency did not specify who carried out the attack.
At the same time, it is known that following the launch of U.S. and Israeli military operations against Iran on February 28, the Iranian military announced a ban on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and has been regularly attacking oil tankers and merchant ships that attempt to pass through this strategically important maritime route.
The UKMTO reported this on social media.
In addition, Iran stated on July 29 that its forces had struck three merchant ships in the Strait of Hormuz area. The incident occurred amid an escalation of the situation in the Middle East and growing tensions surrounding one of the world’s key maritime routes for energy transportation.
As a reminder, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga held a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakchi following Tehran’s statements about possible strikes against Ukraine.
Earlier, Tehran accused Ukraine of attacking an Iranian vessel at Israel’s behest.
On the night of July 29, Iran launched a missile strike on one of the U.S. military bases in the Middle East. This was the first attack since the parties announced last week that they would cease mutual strikes.
