In Russia, a Boeing passenger plane made an emergency return to Sochi after an engine failure

A Boeing 737-800 passenger plane operated by the Russian airline Smartavia, which was flying from Sochi to Arkhangelsk, was forced to make an emergency return to its airport of departure after experiencing a technical malfunction in flight.

The incident occurred late in the evening on June 17.

After takeoff, the crew issued a distress signal over the Black Sea and decided to return to Sochi.

According to aviation news outlets, one of the engines failed during the flight, after which the captain initiated the return procedure and burned off fuel in the holding pattern to ensure a safe landing.

Smartavia confirmed the incident, noting that “an indicator for one of the aircraft’s systems” had activated on board, after which the crew acted in accordance with safety regulations.

“After takeoff, an indicator for one of the aircraft’s systems activated on board, and as a result, in accordance with safety requirements, the decision was made to return to the airport of departure,” the airline reported.

The plane, carrying nearly 200 passengers, landed safely at Sochi Airport.
According to official reports, there were no injuries, and the aircraft has been sent for a technical inspection.

According to industry sources, the crew followed standard procedure during the incident: after receiving the malfunction report, the plane remained in the air for some time to burn off fuel before landing.

An audio recording is also circulating online in which a flight attendant repeats several times while preparing for landing: “Gather together, gather together! Heads down, heads down!”

Experts note that this is not the first time such technical incidents have occurred in Russian aviation. In recent months alone, several cases of in-flight malfunctions have been reported across various airlines.

Earlier, hundreds of passengers were stranded at the airport in the Russian city of Sochi due to massive delays and flight cancellations caused by drone attacks on the Krasnodar Krai from June 14 to 17. In the past 24 hours alone, the airspace over the city was closed four times due to the threat of drone strikes.
