Vaccine against rare strain of Ebola delayed due to complex trials

Developing a vaccine against the rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has caused a new outbreak in Central Africa, could take months before human trials can begin. While hundreds of cases and dozens of deaths have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, scientists are only preparing the initial stages of testing potential treatments, according to Bloomberg.

Work on a vaccine against the rare and dangerous Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, which has triggered a new outbreak in Central Africa, is progressing slowly, and experts estimate that it could be many months before the first human trials begin due to the need for thorough laboratory research and animal testing.

Richard Hatchett, CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), emphasized that potential vaccines are only in the early stages, and the global medical community is currently working in a state of urgent preparation for future trials. “Additional preclinical studies must be completed before human testing can begin, and this takes a significant amount of time,” he noted, explaining the delay in the process.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground remains tense: the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported over 540 suspected cases and at least 136 deaths, while neighboring Uganda has already confirmed new infections and fatalities, which only increases the pressure on health services.

The World Health Organization emphasizes that there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment for this strain, so doctors are forced to work with what they have, focusing on supporting patients and early treatment of symptoms, which can improve survival rates.

According to Bloomberg, potential vaccine developers under consideration include the University of Oxford, Moderna, Public Health Vaccines, and IAVI; however, experts warn that the hasty use of untested solutions could only complicate the situation and undermine trust in medicine in a region where the security situation is already complex.

The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda a public health emergency of international concern due to the rapid spread of the disease.
