An explosion at an LNG processing plant in Qatar injured more than 50 people

A massive explosion and fire occurred at the main liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant in the Ras Laffan industrial complex in Qatar. 

As a result of this incident, 54 people sustained injuries of varying severity, and another 18 people are currently listed as missing.

The emergency occurred on Sunday, June 21, 2026, during the start-up of scheduled production processes. A technical malfunction led to an instantaneous explosion and a massive fire at the “Barzan” gas distribution facility. 

Emergency and rescue services arrived promptly at the scene and were able to contain the fire and bring the situation under control.

Official data on the number of casualties was released by the Qatari Ministry of Interior. 

According to the ministry, the explosion was caused solely by a technical malfunction in the system. At the same time, authorities assured that no leaks of hazardous substances that could pose a threat to the public were detected.

A large-scale search-and-rescue operation is currently underway at the industrial complex. 

The Qatar International Search and Rescue Team and numerous civil defense units have been deployed to search for missing workers. Experts continue to thoroughly inspect the damaged structures and rubble at the site.
